Summer Daze

I couldn't resist blogging from the Wii, I just received the Internet channel this morning, well actually I was woken up at 5AM by the Wii's pulsing blue light. I wish Nintendo would consider people in different timezones when making these announcement's I'm sure many people like me have the console in their bedroom and the "dim" setting for the pulsing light isn't dim enough.

Anyway the browser, how does it fair? Well the font size on summer-daze can be read but is far to small to be legible. On my computer I set the minimum font size to 15/16 to make sites easier on my eyes however this is not an option on the Wii, at least not in the current trial version who knows what extra features the final may have.

The browser appears to mimic 1024 pixel width judging by the fact that I can see large boarders around my site. I was hoping for a width of 800 as it would make things much more legible on an SDTV. Apart from that there isn't really a lot to report, it's just a browser after all and a very basic one at t

EDIT: No I haven't finished the above sentence early that's all the Wii would let me type!

Well this post is only five days late but I have been busy with other things, namely uni work and playing the Wii.

After hearing the words "sell out" I began to wonder how safe my pre-order was, I pre-ordered with GAME and just to make sure did so as soon as they were taking pre-orders, this was around September. Well five days ago on the 8th, at 7am (the earliest time GAME opened) I finally got my hands on the Wii. Getting up at 6 is an experience I would rather forget, or at least had forgotten since the start of my second year of Uni that has no early morning lectures. It really took the life out of me, I was a walking zombie, but not a flesh craved one, I was after the Wii. I managed to sleepwalk down to the bus stop and catch a ride into town.

How many people were crazy enough to be there at 7am? Around thirty, which considering I live in a small-ish town is quite a lot, at least at lot more than I expected as I only imagined a few to be there. I should mention now that this is the first and perhaps only time I have been there on the launch day to pick up a console, why? Well this wasn't just new game X or better graphics on game Y, this was a new way to play and I couldn't wait to try it Cheeky

I decided it was time I emailed the creators of Guild Wars about a Linux client. Why? Well I had a dream that I was the chosen one to lead Linux users to a new light! Actually I was just annoyed at messing about with GW on Linux under Cedega and decided to have a polite moan just to see if there was anything interesting in the reply.

The reply was of course disappointing, however they did say they are "aware that there is an interest in having the game available using other operating systems" and that they will "will continue to evaluate these possibilities" which is much better than, "Linux? No, Frig off".

If for some reason you would like to read my email and NCsoft's full reply, perhaps out of bordom, or a glimmer of hope that I had missed some cryptic clue as to the release date of the Linux client, feel free to do so with the magical link below.

I have owned a DS since a few weeks after it was on sale in the UK. The DS is a great handheld, without a doubt the best on the market. However I got rid of mine (only because I quite fancied getting a DS lite). I went a few months without a DS missing a few great titles being released.

On June the 23rd UK release date I could wait no longer! I made a special trip into town to get my pre-ordered DS lite which I bought with two games, Brain Training and Metroid prime. I have been putting of this post for some time because I wanted the novelty factor to wear off before writing about it to make it as unbiased as I can (also this is going to be a lengthy post and I like to put those off for as long as I can Cheeky).

The DS lite is a DS that's smaller, lighter, has a much brighter screen and is much nicer looking. Apart from that it's repositioned some of the buttons and the mic for a clearer layout. Is it worth the upgrade though? That really does depend on how much £99 is worth to you. The DS lite's screen is fantastic and is reason enough alone for an upgrade in my opinion. The colours now look as they should, not dull and washed away as they have been on every past Nintendo handheld. If you have ever used an emulator for a GBA or DS (or seen screenshots) and compared what you see on your screen to what you see on your handheld, the results have always been disappointing until now. The DS lite bring the brightness and vibrancy of colour that a TFT monitor bears. There's not much more to say about the DS lite since the rest of the improvements, size, weight and look are all obviously a good thing. The DS lite rivals and, in my opinion, beats the sleak look of the PSP.

On to the games I got with the DS lite which are of course the main reason of purchase!

After a bit of fiddling it works sort of, the graphics aren't great and the FPS is poor but it's playable... until it crashes lol. Some location tend to crash the game, I haven't looked into why or if it's possible to fix, I was just pleased to see it running. ATi cards are useless under Linux, I have ordered an nVidia 6800 GT and can't wait to get rid of my ATi card. It'll be very interesting to see the performance difference in Guild Wars Grining
