Initially I was impressed, it's faster of course. It does have headset support and space for two MMC/SD cards, OS 2007 seemed to have some very nice improvments too, all was promising till I started to use it.

It wasn't long before I installed OGG support. It's installed but I don't have OGG support. On the 770 installing OGG support meant OGG support was installed, the 800's version of OGG support means that specific applications written to use the ''OGG support" are the only ones that can play OGG. The 770 did not come with OGG support either, however you could easily install it and it would be fully supported on the device, this meant the file manager recognised the OGG files and the media player would play them. For some insane reasons, the lack of OGG support seems to be hardcoded in both of these apps now. Do Nokia have something against users using a superior free audio codec?

Next, the video support. On the 770 it was perfect, some of the same files that the 770 would play now crash the 800, that's right, a video causes the entire device to restart. This is a joke.

I have no desire to do a proper review of this device now after having being so dissapointed with it. When you buy an upgrade you expect it to be an upgrade not a downgrade.

I realise that these proplems are software issues but will they ever be fixed?

To summarise, the hardware is better than the 770 but the 2007 edition operating system is awful if you plan on playing OGG or watching videos.

I decided it was time for an upgrade, my trusty Nokia 700 (which I am writing this post on via BT keyboard) has served me well over the years, providing a portable Linux based device with much capability.

The N800 is faster and has more RAM which is of course the primary reason for upgrade, the second most important feature is support for a headset, the N770 supported earphones but not had no microphone in. The third reason for the upgrade which really pushed the decision, is that I am looking to get a car soon and GPS would be really nice. Nokia sell GPS software for both the 770 and 80, however, the 770 version is not compatible with the 880 and vice vesa. If I bought the 770 version I and wished to upgrade to the 800 then I would have to buy the GPS software once again. One more reasons is that the 770 rocks Cheeky As far as PDA's go (which I personally class this as) it's the best I have used (even if it has no PIM software). I have had a Palm, iPAQ and Zaurus all of which have fallen short of the mark. The 770 is nearly perfect and could be made so with the introduciotn of particular software but I digress.

Anyhow, I expect the device to arrive soon and will be giving it the usual run down Grining

On a statistically unfounded estimation, I would assume idiots account for 60-80% percent of all Internet users, using the Internet solely for recreational purpose. It really is hard to guestimate this figure with any degree of accuracy but 60-80% is what it "feels like".

If you examine any popular site with a large user base, it seems idiots take the fair share of that userbase. A perfect example would be MySpace, YouTube or Digg. These sites are full of idiots as is evident from the comments there. However, there is also the possibility that the more intellectual users distance themselves from these cretins by refraining from posting there. What is the point of giving input to someone who has failed to grasp the concept of, grammar, punctuation, spelling, etiquette and make up for this by substituting obscene language and moronic comments.

A few hours ago there was a thunderstorm, nothing spectacular but a thunderstorm none the less. I was on the phone at the time and had my ear pressed against the phone listening. I could hear the interference created by each crash of thunder, then came the "big one". That was very loud over the phone and made me jump.

Anyway, the outcome was every device that was connected to my router including my router breaking. The NIC of three PC's were broken and my router no reboots every five minutes! My server is now totally wrecked as it was a small purpose built system which can not have it's NIC replaced Cry My main computer now has a broken on-board NIC. I have had to remove my 0570 Audigy 2 ZS sound card to fit in a replacement NIC and now I'm using some rubbish on board sound card.

Total cost is around 05160! So in future readers, unplug your computer from the phone line in a thunderstorm... curse you electrical discharge! Mad

EDIT: It would seem that I was not the only one affected, seems everyone in this area seems to have been hit to, some have had their phones or alarm systems broken.

I have just downloaded the audio book of "The God Delusion". I'm an agnostic anyway, I have no religion. According to an interview with the author Richard Dawkins, which I just listened to, the purpose of the book is to enlighten people and turn them into atheists. As silly as I believe the majority of religions to be, I'm not sure enlightening people is the something I would want to do.

The purpose with which the book was written for led me rethink something I was thinking about, oddly enough, only yesterday. If someone becomes an atheist are they better off?

This is a very grey question, I would say that a religious extremist with intent to kill himself and others is certainly better off not believing, but I want to talk about those who find comfort in religion. Without religion we are on our own, no parent-like deity watching over us, very vulnerable, we as a species could cease to exist by the effects any one of millions of possible disasters and of course, death is final, the death of friends, family and of course yourself. This idea is nothing new to me but for as long as I have accepted it as the way things are, it still doesn't sound any better, but what would a Christian make of these ideas if their faith was taken away from them? I should imagine they would be horrified. Given the choice would I or anyone else rather walk around with the wool pulled over their eyes or not? It depends on the individual, I think in my case my desire to know and understand would always be greater than my desire to believe.

Personally, I wouldn't really want to change anyone's opinion regarding religion unless I knew that they would appreciate seeing things as I do, which of course you can never know, what if they are converted and hate it? It's for this reason that I'm not entirely sure I agree with the purpose the book was written for but then again I also wonder if the book really could turn people into an atheist, you have to question the sincerity of anyone's religious faith if they have a desire to read such a book but then again maybe someone would want to do it as a test of faith? Perhaps it could make a voice of doubt within their head much louder but could it create the voice of doubt?

To conclude, there is no conclusion, just a presentation of questions that you can mull over if you fell inclined to do so Cheeky
