Beware of Linux The worst thing and advanced Windows user can do is make the switch to Linux, however it's also the best thing an advanced Windows user could do aswell. The reason is simple, "ignorance is bliss". With Windows, yes so many things are horribly broken or done the wrong way but when you know no better it's just the way things are when using a computer.
Enter Linux, for the advanced user wanting complete control over their OS along with stability, security and the option to run/hack things to their needs, Linux wins hands down. So where's the problem, Linux user's have seen the light right, they have found something better? Yes an no, it would be more accurate to say they have entered the Twilight zone, constantly having to switch back and forth between Windows and Linux. You see, Microsofts monopoly is so big that no it becomes near impossible for IT professionals or people persuing this course to avoid Windows. One way or another for whatever reason you'll have to use Windows again. What's so bad about using Windows having used Linux though? Well as I said before "ignorance is bliss". All of Windows problems are no longer just the way things are when you use a computer, they are now huge annoyances. You feel restricted, working in such a clumbsy envorinment that's clearly not up to scratch with Linux for catering to the advance computer user. Every crash, needless popup window and confirmation dialog, every qwirk, illogical operation method and Windows update message is a constant reminder that there is a better way, that you, with your knowledge of this better OS can not use "that better way" to more efficiently complete the task your working on. It's like you have half of your computer locked down and time and time again another Windows shaped brickwall made by Gates himself pop's up for you to bang your head against! Linux is great, but in a market monopolised by Microsoft, sooner or later for whatever reason you'll have to venture into Windows and do you want to be constanstly frustrated and angered by something that you once used with few quarms? In retrospect, not knowing of Linux or having used it would make my journey into the IT profession a much less agrovating one as at university Windows rules and Linux is just a toy. The question is, if I had the choice of going back in time and stoping myself from learning Linux would I? Computing has never been so interesting/fun/educational, but it's also never been so frustrating. |
