First Day of Uni

The first day of Uni came and passed. Today I got sorted into tutor groups and met my tutor for the next year and filled in a couple of forms about my computing abilities. One of the questions on a form was "Have you used Linux?" Yay! I thought Winking

Apart from that not a great deal more happened. I spent a good couple of hours exploring and familiarising myself with Wolverhampton city centre. At the end of the day I met up with what I assumed to be the rest of the computer year undergraduates in a rather crowded room. Not much was said here as the computer was broken and so the would be presented presentation never was. We were told of a prize of a Palm PDA for each of the team members of groups which we shall be sorted into by ability. A challenge I'll find only too easy no doubt.

Uni looks like it should be interesting and hopefully will give me a chance to be mentally challenged by programming tasks. The mention of Linux has given me some hope that people at least know what it is and so perhaps I wont have to say hello to Bill as I do my work on Windows?

Good to know Uni might challenge you, from what my sister does I am not very impressed by the challenge if presents. Just remember to have fun and upstage all the other people in your class by proving you know more than them lol.

I had a little session with Ubuntu today, thought it was pretty good but I still cant use it fully until I get my own PC. I am using Gimp though, bloody awesome for the price ie: free

Well I shall have to see if the challenge improves but from what I understand there wont be a challenge till the second year as the first year is a common year aimed at getting everyone up to speed and so I'm going to have to cover topics like Web Development with HTML lol.

Glad you liked Ubuntu, it is very hard to switch to as a Windows user as you suddenly realise there is lots of things you would like to do but don't know how to. Still after around a month it should be much more easy going.

The GIMP is great software but the one problem I have with it is it's lack of Photoshop style layer effects. In many areas I think it surpasses Photoshop and so I constantly switch between the two depending on what job I'm doing.

Just doing some advertisement... OpenSuSE 10 will be out on 6th october Grining, of course being 10 times as good as Ubuntu Winking.

Hehe, well if Uni doesn't challenge you, I don't really have a problem with it - LogicFury will surely benefit of it Winking. But my sister is now on Uni for the second year, and for her it was VERY hard, already from the beginning. She's not doing computer science though (but theology studies)...

No one cares about SUSE, it's nothing compared with Ubuntu Cheeky

I doubt LF will benefit from it. I am doing a PHP module but it's very basic and I know PHP very well anyway Winking
