Two screens for me

I bought a Nintendo DS on Saturday, being the keen follower of Nintendo that I am. It came with Rayman DS and Asphalt (some racing game). Overall both games are pretty decent. I had never played Rayman before but this game is very good, the levels are challenging and varied and the sounds fit in well. Asphalt is an "okay" game. I wouldn't say it was anything special but its fun none the less. Tracks feel a little too generic and boring for me. I like to have a choice of routes Smileing

The DS is quite a decent hand-held. The graphics are comparable with a PS1 which is quite a disappointment as I expected them to be at the standard of an N64. My main reason for buying a DS was for the upcoming Zelda titles. There are non that I have heard of yet but given that Nintendo have never produced a popular console that doesn't have Zelda I think it's a pretty safe bet. If it wasn't for Zelda I do wonder if I would buy Nintendo products. I'm no big fan of the PS mainly because the only games worth playing on it are available (usually in better quality with easier controls) on my PC however the idea of portable GTA:SA is very temping indeed but again this is going to be a game I shall own on my PC so would I buy it twice? Nope. With Nintendo I only buy games that aren't available for PC (with the exception of Beyond Good & Evil which I bought without realising there was a PC version Smileing ).

I still think Nintendo are capable of capturing the essence of a console game rather than sticking a PC game on a console Cheeky

You know there's an art to giving a comment. Usually when you give a comment you actually not only state your opinion but why you hold that opinion

The DS is great technically, but as a matter of preference I do not care much for the dual screens. I could imagine it would be useful if one were the gameplay screen and the other were for tools/menus/etc, but when I demoed Metroid on a DS it showed in both screens. It's like having a blindspot right in the center!

Is that an okay comment? Cheeky

Yep that's a fine comment, I like to read why someone likes or dislikes them so I can reply to their comment Cheeky

I happen to agree with you, the whole DS thing is stupid I'd rather have a larger screen anyday.

I haven't seen the DS in action yet so I won't comment to that, but I agree Nintendo is the only true console developer (now Sega stopped making consoles). On my 9th birthday I received a Gameboy, and played on NES 16-bit occasionally at a friend's place. I was a big fan of the Mario series at that time, and I still enjoy them today. I only own a PC at the moment, but if I would buy myself a console one day it would strictly be one by Nintendo, as like you said there's no need to buy console games while they are available for the superiour PC.

Now how's that for a comment? lol. Cheeky

That's a great comment Nero, well explained Winking

I'm not a big game fan I admit, most of my time is spent on the computer coding or as of late just learning more Linux however I picked up the DS last night and gave it a really good playing.

Must have played for hours which is unusual for me (unless it's a Zelda game). I was playing the "Asphalt" racing game which is much better than I thought at first looks. There is a garage where you can buy upgrades and the cars actually start to handle very well. It's amazing the difference some new tires can make to grip.

Anyway I'm sure you'll be pleased to know that Nintendo's next console code named the Nintendo Revolution is backwards compatible for every Nintendo console/handheld game ever made. Whether that means it will have ports for these through an extention (doubtfull) or that you can download them to the hard drive I don't know but I'm looking forward to playing some old classics, Goldeneye springs to mind. At last I can get rid of my Snes and N64 lol.

Hey that's great to hear, I might consider buying that Revolution one day. I experienced a lot during childhood, including moving a lot, and hearing that it sucks that I don't own any games from that time anymore. Sad
But I surely will be searching for those classics then. Also Goldeneye and Perfect Dark for the N64 for example, and probably all Mario games I will still be able to find. Smileing

Kind of an old topic to bring up, but in case you didn't read it yourself in the meanwhile...
Like you suspected the Revolution will give you the ability to download all classics from the NES 16-bit to N64, the backward compatibilty will only apply to the GC games. Too bad they won't include the handhelds though because most games I'd like to re-play again are the ones on the first Gameboy. Not bad enough to buy one again though lol. Smileing
